We have donated 100 nearly new bras and 47 brand new ladies’ knickers to a city based charity called Your Smalls Appeal.
We started our campaign to collect the undies on International Women’s Day (IWD2018) back in March and along with the support of clients, suppliers, friends, neighbours and family members we were able to collect the impressive haul.
The garments have now been handed over to appeal organiser, Diana Esho who will ship them to The Gambia in Africa in the autumn.
Your Smalls Appeal was set up in January 2016 as an initiative to help and empower girls in Africa.
Starting in The Gambia and with strong links to the Wullingkumma Nursery and Lower School and Medical Centre, the organisation sends recycled or new bras that are vital for the healthy development of young girls.
Our Deputy MD, Hannah visited The Smalls Appeal at their base at Phoenix Square. She said, “It’s been brilliant to be able to donate so many garments to Your Smalls Appeal. What started off as a small collection just for IWD2018 became a three month project to pull together as many lovely bras and knickers as we could.
“We loved the fact that we could share something practical and personal as well as something that we had readily available at home. I couldn’t imagine having gone school or having to go work without having the basics like underwear. It really does make you realise how lucky we are.”
Diana said, “I am extremely grateful for the support and interest Hannah has shown with my project. Supporting young girls and women is vital where basic items we take for granted are unattainable due to cost.
“Providing a bra for support and comfort and a reusable menstruation kits keeps young girls at school and free from infection. Being kept away from school denies the girls access to an equal right to an educated.
“I always feel so blessed when others see my passion for change whether a cash donation or a underwear collection. It only helps to spur me on and do more.”
In 2017 Your Smalls Appeal connected with a charity in Mombasa, Kenya to provide starter bras to the young school girls and this year they launched a campaign to raise money to help pay for menstruation kits.
It is a sad fact that many girls in developing countries miss school while they are on their period. The Your Smalls Appeal provides a hygienic and safe solution to ensure girls feel secure and comfortable. In some countries, girls will use dirty rags, which lead to infection and in some cases animal ‘dung’, which can lead to death.
The Smalls Appeal supply girls with reusable menstruation kits, which last for three years. Each kit is beautifully made by women in The Gambia, who have been trafficked. This, in turn, helps sexually exploited women by providing them with a job and income. The kits include a bag with a single bar of soap, a flannel, pair of pants and reusable soft fabric pads and a fabric insert.
