It’s not just about writing press releases in the Unsworth Sugden PR office, as Hannah and Tom found when they went to visit client Barratt Mercia’s new Discovery House at the Bluebell development in Nuneaton last week. They took classes from two local primary schools on a tour of the property, with activities and quizzes throughout the day. The children were also treated to a fun but informative talk by presenter Hannah Patterson which they all loved.

With my first three months now just a blur in the rear view mirror it’s surely high time for me to weigh in with my first blog post. So here goes.
I can safely say my debut months in PR have flown by like the proverbial arrow and it’s been great to get stuck in with a dizzying array of events and promotions.
Christmas came and went in a flurry of snow, Christmas card competitions, hampers and cuttings for our fabulous clients and the New Year is now old hat - I really haven’t looked back since starting out with team PR.
I’ve found that for a group of professionals in the business of managing reputation, PR has done a great job for itself, conjuring images of champagne and fancy bars. Let me tell you: I haven’t had a single cosmo yet and I’m starting to get worried.
From penning press releases to attending meetings and arranging photo shoots with our fantastic photographers, there’s never a dull moment. I’ve landed on my feet with some terrific colleagues who have been really supportive and who are always kind enough not to show any exasperation at my frequent questions about PR - and it’s great to work with such experienced pros who have that steely look in their eyes that says “I’ve been there and done it, kid. I’ve written the release, bought the t-shirt and had the article published in the Milton Keynes Citizen.”
Looking around Unsworth Sugden towers you can see that the ingredients for success are much the same here as anywhere else - a heady blend of determination, hard work and skill. And you can add cheerfulness and good humour to that, too, especially after the first cup of tea of the day. It’s great to be a part of the excellent work that gets done here - and even though I’m still aspiring to the high standards that get set around me, it’s really rewarding when you see the fruits of your labour in the media.
As well as starting to learn the tricks of the trade I’ve also graduated since joining the company, having completed an MA in Cultures of Empire, Resistance and Postcoloniality (English to you and me) at York University - it really has been a whistle stop few months and I was delighted (and surprised) to find I’d graduated with distinction. I’m genuinely chuffed with that.
No doubt about it, I’ve really enjoyed my first few months here and I’m looking forward to reporting back on the exciting work the department does in more blog posts in the future.

The time I have spent in the PR department of Unsworth Sugden has been a great opportunity for me. Having never completed work experience before, I was unsure what to expect and what would be expected of me.
I arrived on the first day to meet Hannah Elwell the Director of PR. She gave me a tour of the building and introduced me to her colleagues as we went along; and everyone was very welcoming.
The work that I have carried out during my week has been an invaluable experience for me to get an insight into the day to day running of a PR department. The tasks set for me have given me the ability to use my imagination and build on my understanding of PR. For instance, I have completed research on numerous items set for me, used my creative flair and knowledge to come up with some names for new housing developments that the department works with; as well as ideas for branding items. I also helped develop competition ideas for the internal newsletters, contributed to putting together the press cuttings for summary packs, and learnt about AVEs, OTS and PRE.
As well as this, I have had the opportunity to see how each person contributes to the success of Unsworth Sugden. Everyone is very busy and cheerful when liaising with clients or colleagues, so it is a great work environment to be in – I have felt completely comfortable, part of a team and my confidence has grown tremendously.

In preparation for a ‘British’ themed family event this bank holiday weekend, the PR team went all out to source the best entertainment and catering for our client Barratt East Midlands.
Visitors to the Grange development this Saturday will be treated to donkey rides, an authentic Punch and Judy show and complimentary ice-cream and fish and chips! We even had Barratt branded sticks of rock made as a memento for visitors on the day.
Lets hope the rain stays away. Unfortunately sunshine is probably the only thing we can’t guarentee.
We’re good but we’re not that good!

Unsworth Sugden’s advertising division and digital marketing division, US Digital, have combined their specialities to great effect for the Woodland Trust. Their knowledge of advertising and the importance of utilising a strong online presence has allowed the Woodland Trust to find the right candidates for numerous positions.
Thanks to an effective combination of print, website design and website development, the Woodland Trust was inundated with strong, high quality applicants. This proves the internet has not yet completely outdated print and that the qualities of both can be used to great affect.

We recently welcomed De Montfort uni student Liam Grimmette to the PR department for work experience. Here’s how he got on…
I’m just coming to the end of three weeks work experience at Unsworth Sugden which has been fantastic. My first day started with a brief tour of the building where I got a very positive vibe. Everyone had a smile on their face which was welcoming in itself. It wasn’t long before I felt like a genuine member of the team and I had a list of jobs to do.
My first jobs included coming up with competition ideas for a future newsletter and updating the company marketing calendar. I remember one of my lecturers at university saying that no day is ever the same when working in PR, and they weren’t wrong. Over the past three weeks, I have done everything from writing press releases and putting together launch event packs to arranging press-cuttings for meetings and researching strawberry-shaped balloons. The work experience has also enabled me to gain insight into how a PR company works together to create successful results.
Overall, my experience at Unsworth Sugden has been priceless and has been genuinely enjoyable throughout. The clients at Unsworth Sugden are very fortunate to have an extraordinary PR company representing them.

Unsworth Sugden’s web division USdigital has designed an exciting new microsite for housebuilder Barratt Homes’ Milton Keynes development, Vizion.
Vizion is a flagship development with over 307 luxury apartments, situated in the centre of Milton Keynes. The website will promote the great location and attractive lifestyle that Vizion offers. A major selling point is its close proximity to the bars and restaurants at ‘The Hub MK’ and the nearby shopping centres. The development is likely to attract a lot of interest from homebuyers from outside the area, who may well be unfamiliar with Milton Keynes. The website will be showcasing all of the exciting new things Milton Keynes has to offer.
The microsite will be promoted by both press and online advertising.
