Westleigh Building for the Future

Posted by Dave Toyn
April 9th, 2009

Client Westleigh Developments Ltd recently welcomed local students to its headquarters in Whetstone for an event that forms part of the Leicestershire Education Business Company’s (LEBC) Excellence in Enterprise Awards 2009.

Entitled ‘Building for the Future’, the event saw teams of six pupils from De Lisle Catholic School in Loughborough, Countesthorpe Community College in Countesthorpe and John Cleveland College in Hinckley undertake a number of construction-based challenges, to demonstrate the variety of skills required to work in the building industry.

Participants from each school were able to watch and learn new skills from Westleigh employees during the morning, by the end of which all teams had a member trained in the fields of surveying, estimating, brick-laying, health and safety and two educated in timber construction. These skills were then put in to practice with each team challenged to construct a timber-frame scaled down house using materials from Westframe, the timber-frame division of Westleigh Developments.

There’s snow way we’re not working!

Posted by Dave Toyn
February 5th, 2009

Whilst millions have taken days off due to the recent snow downpours, team Unsworth Sugden has bucked the trend, with people using a combination of bikes, trains, buses, cars and even braving the icy conditions under foot to get to work.

But not ones to want to miss out on all the fun, part of lunchtime was taken up by a creative team building exercise, the results of which you can see below.

Ok so it’s not exactly a work of art. But it goes to show that even those who turn up to work can have some fun!

Britain’s businesses turn to designers during recession

Posted by Paul Bradley
January 8th, 2009

54% of UK businesses are planning on using design to help them survive the current economic climate, and stand out from their competitors, according to new research by The Design Council.

The 2008 survey, which covered 1,500 businesses in the UK across all sizes and sectors, revealed that rather than companies cutting back on spending during 2009, they see design as an integral part of their operations. Over half said that design had become more critical in achieving its business aims over the past 3 years.

The Design Council has put together an online resource on their website, for businesses to find out more and how design could help their business.

Visit  www.designcouncil.org.uk/designinadownturn to find out more.

Design Council Chief Executive David Kester said: “Recession is no time to be battening down the hatches. It’s the moment when design becomes absolutely critical to survival, growth and success – and it’s great to see that there’s a growing recognition of this within the business community.”

New website for Barratt Homes

Posted by Paul Bradley
December 10th, 2008

We’ve just finished work on a new microsite which lives as part of the main Barratt Homes’ website.

The microsite is based around Vizion - a superior apartment development based in Milton Keynes.

The dedicated microsite was developed as it was felt that we could really make more of a song and dance about why people should consider moving there. It called for something more than the standard page offered up on the Barratt site essentially.

Many people commute from Milton Keynes to the London area, and Vizion is positioned just a couple of minutes from the motorway. Also there is the new The Hub just over the road which offers a great selection of bars, cafes and restaurants. (It’s pretty good, I’ve been down there to check it out.)

We’ve started targeting the website with our traditional press ads we produce for Barratt, and so far the response has been great!

e-cards & e-newsletters - What about the subject line?

Posted by Paul Bradley
December 2nd, 2008

Many companies email their customer database with monthly or quarterly e-newsletters. Why not? It’s a good way of reaching your audience quickly and cheaply, and it keeps your brand in your customers’ minds.

In addition, at this time of year we see companies looking at other alternatives to traditional Christmas cards, with more and more investigating the the e-card route.

When sending an e-newsletter or e-card through to your customers’ inbox, the subject line of the email is of the utmost importance, for these 2 reasons -

1. Spam filters
These days spam filters are very sophisticated, and even if your email isn’t peddling a well known prescription drug, doesn’t mean your customers’ server will agree that your email is any different. To overcome this, be careful in the wording you choose. Avoid words like ‘free’ ‘credit’  and ‘call now’ and also overuse of punctionation such as exclamation marks and question marks. In short, be sensible with it, word it as though you are writing a personal email to someone.

2. Open Rate
It’s all too easy to press delete on an email before you’ve even opened it. Sifting through emails has now become  like sifting through your post at home; complete with Domino’s menus, credit card offers and charity plastic bags to put your old clothes in.
You need to make sure your recipient opens your email, and the only way of securing this is with the subject line. Include your brand in the subject, if your customers know it. If you’ve acquired your email marketing list through your customer database, they should be aware of you.
Include some pull, a taster perhaps of what is enclosed.
Wrong - “December newsletter
Right - “Acme Ltd News - Savings across all our rocketpacks during December

Of course, when you’ve got through to your customer, and you have their attention, you need to make sure you’re delivering a knockout email to them!

Short SEO video link

Posted by Paul Bradley
November 3rd, 2008

I’ve just added a video courtesy of YouTube to our sister site USdigital on the subject of search engine optimisation.

We wanted something that in a nutshell would demistify (slightly) the complex world of search engine optimisation, or SEO for short. Matt Cutts who currently works at Google HQ as head of the spam team does a great job of running through the preliminary basics of SEO, to give fledgling companies a good start on the SEO road.
